Students have been working on their invertebrate website project throughout most of the Marine biology unit. The project will wrap up today as the students present their websites, and teach their classmates all about the invertebrate they have chosen to research. The entire class period is dedicated to these presentations, and students have as much time as necessary to present all of their websites. Each presentation will conclude with a quick question and answer session for students and teacher to ask questions of the presenters. After all of the presentations are finished students will be allowed to offer feedback to the teacher or class about the project.
Opportunities to Learn:
Depth of Knowledge
DOK Level 4: Students will critique and analyze the process of the project and provide feedback.
DOK Level 2: Students will present their website and teach the class.
Prerequisite Knowledge
Research done on invertebrate specie
Information about invasive species
Information about hydrothermal vent ecosystems
Environmental factors
Students will present their websites to the class using the class computer and LCD projector.
Students are given enough time to go through their website, without being redundant.
Materials
Computer
Website/Presentation Rubric *See Day 2*
LCD projector
Objectives:
Students will present accurate information about their chosen invertebrates, through use of their website and possible additional materials and visual aids.
Students will answer classmates and teachers questions to the best of their knowledge using the information and knowledge they have gained during this project.
Instruction:
Opening:
Students are given a few minutes to meet with their partners to organize last minute thoughts.
An order of presentations will be established.
Engagement:
Presentations will begin, following the order established.
When finished presenters will hold a quick question and answer session with classmates and teacher.
Closure:
When all presentations are finished teacher will ask for feedback about the project as a whole.
"Did you enjoy making a website?"
"Do you think having this skill will help you in the future?"
"How did you feel the workload was compared to other long term projects you have encountered throughout your school careers?"
"Did you feel as though you had enough, needed more, or had too much class time?"
Assessment:
This project is the summative assessment of the fist part of the marine biology unit, incorporating ideas about marine ecosystems, marine taxonomy, invasive species, hydrothermal vent communities, and organismal adaptations.
Presentations and websites are assessed using the rubric. *See Day 2 for a copy*
